Have you ever heard the saying, “I know that I waste half of my advertising budget. The problem is I don’t know which half!” It is this very philosophy that is prompting me to strongly inform you… advertising doesn’t work!

Let me show you why:

  • There is no way to track effectiveness (or ineffectiveness)
  • It’s impersonal
  • The target audience is too large
  • It’s costly to redo or improve
  • There is no call to action

What surprises me is the number of small business owners that save their marketing dollars just to waste them on ineffective advertising. Then, they complain because nothing is working and they don’t have any customers.

I know what you’re thinking, “Isn’t advertising and marketing the same thing?” Well, not really. Let me explain the differences. Advertising includes: commercials, billboards, radio, and newspapers. Marketing includes: emails, letters, postcards, and fax.

So how is follow-up marketing better than advertising?

  • You can track response rates
  • You can quickly change campaigns that aren’t working
  • You can specifically target your audience
  • It leads prospects to an immediate sell

If you really want to attract more customers, you will learn to market and leave the advertising to those gazillion dollar companies.

Remember, marketing can make the
difference between doing alright,
and skyrocketing your business

I’m curious. What drove you to start your own small business? A passion for the product or service you provide? A desire to be your own boss? A chance to dust off some ambition? A drive to stick it to “the man?”

Did you become a small business owner because you enjoy marketing? Probably not. But, if you’re going to continue to grow your business you have to realize this important fact: you are a marketer, not a widget provider.

Let me quickly show you the difference between a marketer and a widget provider.

A Widget Provider:
Has products
Talked to prospects
Has customers
Owns a business
Hopes they’ll stay in business
A Marketer:
Sells products
Continually talks to a list of prospects
Builds relationships with customers
Grows their business
Is building their business future

So how do you become a marketer? I’ll get into that with subsequent posts. However, here are a few questions I want you to think about:

  • Do you know the difference between advertising and marketing?
  • Are you building your prospect and customer lists?
  • Does your business have a marketing “system” in place?

Remember, marketing can make the difference between doing alright, and skyrocketing your business!

Today, I am going to give you some quick tips on how to increase your opt-in results. First, I will tell you that building a list of contacts is very important to the survival of your business. By having a list of contacts, you are able to promote your products and services to them and generate additional income for your business.

People buy when they are ready to buy, not necessarily when you want them to buy. So, it is imperative that you have an automated marketing strategy that is continuously placing your products in front of your contacts.



Your list-building campaign also serves as a way for you to create rapport with your contacts. They begin to know you and they see the value you offer. Your messages must provide that value in a way that shows your contacts that you have their best interest at heart. You must provide them timely, relevant and valuable information, information that serves to help them solve their problems. They will like you for this, and you will end up with a customer for life.



Ok. I could continue forever explaining to you the importance of having a list, but that is not why you came here. You came here to find out how to increase your opt-in results, right? Well, we are going to get there in just a second. I want to make a final statement about building your list and then we will move forward. It does you no good to have a list if you can not provide value to your contacts. They will opt-in today and be gone tomorrow if they do not see you as someone that can really help them reach their goals. The keyword I am driving home here is: VALUE. So, you got that?

Ok. Now lets move forward…



Here are some simple tweaks you can implement today to increase your opt-in results.

1. Location. The location of your opt-in box is incredibly important. Your opt-in box must be located above the fold, appearing in either the upper left or upper right of your website. There’s a lot of psychology behind all this, but I will not get into explaining all that today. You just need to know that this is where you need to put it in order to get the best results.



2. Offer. You must offer them something of value. People don’t want to sign-up for another newsletter or be contacted when you make updates to your website. They have a hard enough time managing the information they are already receiving in their email. They want to know what do I get for giving you my name, email address, and whatever additional information you are requesting.

Create a special report or an e-book that provides them useful tips for improving their business. Give them some free training videos. Find out what your target audience want and give it to them.



3. Appearance. Make your opt-in form standout. Research shows that a large portion of visitors will leave within seconds of landing on your page if they do not immediately find a compelling reason to stay. In the short amount of time you have them on your site, you must be able to draw their attention to the important areas of your website. Your opt-in form is one of those areas. Take a look at my form to the right. There is absolutely no way anyone is going to miss that form. That big red arrow instantly draws your attention. The highlighted text provides the value. The submit button indicates that the offer is instantly available. Adding that big red arrow substantially increased my results. Go ahead, download it and use it on your own website.



4. Verified Opt-in. If you are using verified opt-in, be sure to provide specific instructions to your prospects on how they go about verifying their email address. You don’t want them confused. It’s best to use your own self-created confirmation page as opposed to the default page offered by your autoresponder service. This way you will be able to guide your prospects through the steps necessary to receive whatever you are offering them. You will most likely receive less subscribers when you use verified opt-in and even fewer when using double verified opt-in. However, the people that do go through this process of verifying their information are usually more interested in what you have to offer. They are the people you want to work with. You decide what is best for you — more or less.



5. Inline Opt-in Box. Hovering, Fly-in, Pop-up, Pop-Under, Pop-Around, Slide-In and Slide-Under opt-in boxes are rather annoying. The best results come from using a standard inline type opt-in box. You are ensured your subscribers will see your opt-in box because it will not be blocked by some pop-up ad technology. If it is placed in the right area, contains a really great offer and provides value, you will generate subscribers. Split test between the different variants and see which one works best for your website.

6. Split Test. Your overall goal is to get people to subscribes to your list. You will have no idea how to do this if you do not know what is working and what is not working. Split testing various combinations of colors, sizes, fonts, pictures and anything else you can come up with to make your opt-in message standout. Use the free Google Website Optimizer to track your results.

I hope this information was very helpful to you. If you focus on providing value to your visitors, they well immediately see this when they hit your website. They will want to follow you and learn more about your business, products and services. Implementing some or all of these tweaks should help you get started.
